Doublin' Down No.17 ft XL Middleton & Moniquea (Los Angeles, CA) - 9pm - $10

Hustle & Soul City Presents: Doublin Down No.17

Featured guests: XL Middleton & Moniquea (Los Angeles, CA)

Doors: 9pm // $10 entry // 21+

http://mofunkrecords.com/

XL Middleton is a musician from California whose format falls into the funk-laden style the region has traditionally been known for. The Pasadena-based artist/producer has been hard at work for years crafting melodic, chord-heavy tunes and which have earned him accolades on major websites such as Uproxx, Okay Player and HipHopDX, where a collaboration with Crooked I made the rounds, as well as national print coverage in the Washington Post and major local print coverage in LA Weekly, where his album Tap Water made it to a Best of 2015 list. XL has toured internationally in Japan, Canada, and throughout Europe, catering to fans of the funked-out West Coast sound – a fanbase which, although not the norm in mainstream music, has been finding its way back to notoriety, with artists like XL at the cusp of what has become known as the modern funk movement.

XL has released volumes of work, the sound of which embodies the party feel, bringing music back to where it was before it found its way into upscale clubs, while at the same time mixing it with a futuristic brand of funk inspired by legends such as George Clinton, Roger Troutman, & Cameo, not to mention hip hop funksters like Battlecat & DJ Quik. He evolved from his beginnings as a hip hop artist to a full-fledged modern funk musician, educated by the music he once sampled in the course of creating rap beats. At an XL show, you might find him singing notes through a vocoder, rapping, or shredding solos on a shoulder synth (more colloquially known as a "keytar"). He operates his own label, Cavi Sounds, founded as Crown City Ent. in 2003 and relaunched under the current label name in 2016. In addition, he founded another imprint, MoFunk Records, with Funkmosphere resident DJ and fellow LA native Eddy Funkster. XL has also released music in conjunction with noteworthy labels such as Bastard Jazz, Omega Supreme, and Voltaire, effectively bridging the gap between fans of modern funk/80's boogie and 90's g-funk, all of which has been tremendously influential to the XL Middleton sound.

In addition to his own solo material, XL produces music for modern funk songstress Moniquea, and is gearing up to release his next solo album in 2017.

Moniquea was born in Gary, Indiana and raised in Pasadena, California. She vividly recalls watching her mother rehearse as a lead singer alongside other relatives and friends in the Pasadena-branded group The Roses. As a youth, she was exposed to countless volumes of 70’s soul and the electrified sounds of 80’s R&B, which shaped her sound immeasurably. Today, she counts a wide range of artists as influences, from Deniece Williams and Etta James to Stevie Nicks. Her voice carries two distinct characteristics that play into each other perfectly – A “so-retro-it’s-actually-new” twang that harks back to Evelyn “Champagne” King; the second, a jazzy vibrato that easily evokes the tender, smoky voice of Erykah Badu or even Billie Holiday. Moniquea is vocally equipped to sing contemporary R&B/soul, go the Amy Winehouse route, or bring back the synthy, dance-friendly sound of 80’s boogie funk – her current musical direction.

No stranger to the spotlight, Moniquea solidified her local presence by singing at Pasadena’s world-famous Rose Bowl at only 15 years old. Quickly moving past hometown boundaries, she went on to open for Westside Connection during the height of their success, and has since performed at nearly every reputable venue in LA – The Whisky, The Roxy, Viper Room, Cinespace, and more. She has also twice performed at the annual Taste Of Soul festival, and the Kingfest at Leimert Park, both drawing crowds in the thousands.

After independently releasing her self-titled debut in 2011, Moniquea joined forces with the Crown City Entertainment label to bring her vision of the revamped 80’s sound to life.

Grownup Music presents: Blank Thomas' Hoops Unlimited 2 (GUM003) - 9pm - $5

Blank Thomas (GUM TAPE RELEASE)
Nadir Smith
Wamhoda
Demonlover
Larva Lu's Deep Tape (between sets)

The next Grownup Music release is upon us. This time around we have the honor of offering you Blank Thomas' new full length "Hoops Unlimited 2": two dystopian basketball inspired journeys performed entirely live by one of St Louis most prominent electronic gurus. To be released on this night on hand copied, hand numbered tapes adorned with a surprise that should guarantee a very special release.

Hoops Unlimited 2 travels through cacophony with remarkable charisma. Machinery explosions that suddenly tint melodic ideas offer immediate contrast– the body's energy protuberates as if trying to escape the skin with each alarming hit. With a myriad of rhythms, samples, instrumentation and evolutions, as well as a hefty album length runtime, HU2 successfully encompasses the seemingly unencompassable nature of Blank Thomas' core: Electronic music as scientific research, sonic experimentation as travel and sound clashes as a macabre orchestra.

Bring money to buy a tape from Blake, we assure you it'll become a very special part of your collection.

-Blank Thomas-
The hoopster himself. Blank Thomas' live setup evolves constantly but always centers around meticulously crafted samples. Equally as impressive as his vanguardist sound, Blank Thomas' innate drive allows him to shell out high quality pieces on a very regular basis. He is sure to be bringing the big guns for tonight's release, and I honestly can't wait to see what he has in store. In case you didn't read up there, he's releasing his new album Hoops Unlimited 2 (GUM003) on tape for this evening.

-Nadir Smith-
Smith has developed an important divide from the conventional concepts of tension and release in music. Layering becomes the harbinger of tension, with countless intricate sounds in an amalgam emerging from two samplers almost tormenting the mind. His release peeks out at points– hints of conventionalism give the brain a false sense of relaxation and keep the knees locked and ready.

-Wamhoda-
A contemplative synth programmer, Wamhoda aims for grandiose rather than overpopulation. His sonical evolution throughout is based on minute change that is nonetheless assimilated by the attentive body. Warm but chilling pads expand and contract attacking one's balance and providing a landscape tinted in neon and violet.

-Demonlover-
Despite the chameleonic nature of Andy Lashier's brainchild, Demonlover seems to have settled into a groove and become the indisputable leading force in live electronic music in this city. An obsession with imperfections through the fickle nature of electronics and slightly disjointed rhythmic patterns topped by Andy's warm, wet and gooey ultra-processed vocals offers you to the night.
"Lol ooey gooey butter cake. Jj p siq 2 ya kno" - the chameleon

-Larva Lu: Deep Tape-
Larva will be providing musicalization before, between and after sets on this wonderful release night. Make sure to come ready to dance, whatever that might mean for you. Her tapes, and her altering of said tapes, and her ever changing palette of music are sure to attack you inside.
