Black Cinema Club presents . . .

"Chico & Rita"
Director: Fernando Trueba, Javier Mariscal and Tono Errando
Starring Eman Xor Oña and Limara Meneses

Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love. (via IMDB)

ABOUT BCC:

Plarn-wit-Purpose

Heyyyyy Heyyyyy Heyyyyy everyone!!!!! Yes we're at it again...Yippppie!!!!!Please join Shareca Sheabrown Pitts of Cherokee Street Reach and ReeCee Hartnell for another fabulous plarn party on Saturday April 29, 2017 from 2pm to 5pm.

It's here in this wonderful space that you will learn to all the necessary steps to turn non recyclable plastic bags into plastic yarn (plarn), which will be turned into sleeping mats for homeless veterans.

Both Shea and ReeCee have extensive history with both crocheting and teaching this art and both will be on hand to help guide you through and also instruct new comers.

This party with a purpose will help us help our homeless neighbors by providing them with a little portable comfort as well as give us all an opportunity to do some real meaningful community service, helping people in need and keeping some of those pesky bags out of the landfills.

What you need:
****"YOU*****
The most important piece to this project

****Plastic bags****
It takes about 700 bags to make one mat, so your stash is definitely welcome here.( Please remember we can't use the heavy bags like Aldi bags they are difficult to work with)

**We need help-------
- sorting the bags by color
-cutting the bags into strips
-interlocking the strips and
rolling into plarn balls
-crocheting the plarn

***Large crochet hooks size N or better no bigger than S****

There will be give-a-ways and Prospect will be holding us down musically (if you were at the last one you know it's just hype)

This is a Potluck event so please bring your favorite snack to share!!

Anyone wanting to contribute to the cause can PayPal

Stylesofurious@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing each and every one of your smiling faces and sharing our positive energy with you.

(Please be mindful to bring no small children to the space)

A Celebration of Fros, Locs, Curls, Cuts and the Pursuit of Nappiness
- - - - -
SUPERNATURAL is a party celebrating the beauty, flyness and all-around badass style of black natural hair. It's an event not only to show off fly natural 'dos, but it also serves as a welcoming party to any recently natural individuals who may feel alone in their natural-hair journey. A common thread in a number of black women's stories starting from the "big chop" (cutting off permed hair to grow their hair naturally) to where they are currently is the negativity they tend to encounter from family and friends. Few realize how alone and uncertain the process of going (back) natural can be for those who don't already have a circle of encouraging loved ones to lift them up - particularly women. For many, it may seem there isn't an accessible community they can lean on for support and be inspired. But there is and we figure why not have a party to officially welcome them into that community? Anytime one has the courage to embrace their natural hair in today's society, it's cause for celebration as far as we're concerned, so SUPERNATURAL is here

Setting the mood with sounds of afrobeat, soul, house, trap, electro, hip-hop and more will be Supernatural creator Nappy DJ Needles of The Soulition and resident Supernatural DJ Blvck Spvde

Organizing Against the Savior Mentality 6-8pm

  • Blank Space STL

What is the role for people with privilege in liberation movements? What does accountable organizing mean in this political moment? A conversation about privilege and resistance featuring poet and educator Treasure Shields Redmond, and journalist and organizer Jordan Flaherty.

BIOS:
A Mississippi native, Treasure Shields Redmond is a poet, speaker, diversity and inclusion coach, and social justice educator. In 2016 she founded her company, Feminine Pronoun Consultants, LLC. Even though Treasure is completing a PhD in English Literature and Criticism, is a published writer, gifted veteran educator, and has spoken on stages all over the U.S. and in Europe, she uses her humble beginnings in the federal housing projects in Meridian, Mississippi to fuel her passion for helping college-bound students write extraordinary college entrance essays, and offering perceptive leaders creative diversity and inclusion facilitation. You can purchase her book, CHOP, which focuses on the life of civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer. If you are the super busy parent of a high schooler and feeling overwhelmed by the college admissions process, Treasure offers simple solutions on her website, www.GetTheAcceptanceLetter.online.

Jordan Flaherty is an award-winning journalist, producer, and author. His print journalism has been featured in publications from the New York Times to Colorlines, as well as in seven anthologies. He has been a guest on shows from Anderson Cooper 360 to Democracy Now, and he has produced television documentaries and news reports for Al Jazeera America, Al Jazeera English, and The Laura Flanders Show. He was the first journalist to bring the case of the Jena Six to a national audience, he played himself on HBO’s television series Treme, and he was a target of the New York City Police Department’s spying programs. He is the author of Floodlines: Community and Resistance from Katrina to the Jena Six and the new book No More Heroes: Grassroots Responses to the Savior Mentality. You can see more of his work at jordanflaherty.org.

MORE ABOUT NO MORE HEROES:
From the Crusades to Black Lives Matter, No More Heroes is a grassroots history of resistance to the savior mentality. This book weaves the stories of teachers, international volunteers, sex workers, FBI informants, indigenous organizers, and prison abolitionists into a narrative of revolutionary change that travels from Alaska to Palestine, from Karl Marx to Muhammad Ali, and from KONY 2012 to the Red Cross.

No More Heroes brings us real life stories of life-or-death conflict: Riad Hamad, a Lebanese middle school teacher in Texas betrayed by FBI informant Brandon Darby. Monica Jones, a Black transgender sex work activist arrested for “walking while trans” in Phoenix, Arizona. Haidar Eid, a professor resisting colonialism and liberalism in his daily life and work in Gaza City. Sophie Lucido Johnson, a recent college graduate who finds her youthful idealism channeled by others to displace unionized African American teachers in New Orleans.

No More Heroes explores the growing response to these dynamics: grassroots and street-based uprisings like the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and Black Lives Matter, creating accountable movements focused on real, systemic change.

"No More Heroes exposes the savior complex for what it really is: imperialism camouflaged as a rescue operation. A perfect gift for the age of Trump."
-Robin D. G. Kelley, Author, Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination

"From systemic racism to climate change, there are no easy fixes to the deep- rooted crises of our time. In this marvelous, enormously instructive book, Jordan Flaherty explores how we too often allow the struggle for change to be undermined by would-be saviors—and how today’s grassroots social movements, led by communities on the frontlines of crisis, are charting a far more powerful path forward."
– Naomi Klein, Author, This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine

"Buy this book if you believe a better world is possible and want to know how to get there. From Jordan Flaherty, the journalist that broke the story of The Jena Six, comes this thrilling people’s history of current movements for revolutionary change. A powerful, engaging, exciting book for anyone concerned about the state of the world."
-Cynthia McKinney, 2008 Green Party Presidential Candidate; former Georgia Congresswoman
